* ATTENTION: It is crucial that you choose only one email address to login to the SoL website, and use it consistently. For example, if your online membership is linked to your personal email, and you try logging in with a different address (such as a work email), the website will treat you as a new user and grant you a "guest" status. When this happens you may notice that your level of access on the website will be drastically reduced. If you don't remember which email you should use, please use the "forgot your password?" feature for each of your email addresses. A temporary password will be sent to the email address associated with your online account. If this doesn't work, please send a brief email to our webmaster with your first and last name, and a list of emails you may have used to login.

1. visit www.solonline.org
2. in the upper right corner of the screen, click the link that reads "lost username/password?"

Once you login, please change your temporary password.
1. click the "Edit My Profile" link in the upper right-hand corner of your personal home page,
2. select "update password" in the upper left of the profile edit screen.

Q: How can I change my password?

A: To change your password, you may click the "Edit My Profile" link in the upper right-hand corner of your personal home page, and then select "update password" in the upper left of the profile edit screen.

Q: The password you gave me isn't working. Can you help?

A: The password is case sensitive. To avoid mishaps, always try to copy and paste the password given to you. In addition, make sure the password matches up with the right login email address.

Q: I am a member of SoL [or have participated in a SoL course or event] but why is it when I log in to the site and try to go to the member directory I get a permission error?

A; You may have created a duplicate account by logging in with an email address not associated with your online account. Try using the "lost username/password?" feature with other email addresses you may have used to login. If this doesn't work, send a brief email to our webmaster with your first and last name, and a list of emails you may have used.

Q: Who can log in to the SoL website?

A: Anyone can login to the SoL website by self-registering, but if you are a member of SoL or have participated in a SoL course or event within the past year you will have greater access to materials on the site.

Q: Can I share the password you gave me with others in my company who are interested in SoL?

A: If your company is an organizational member of SoL, any employee who wishes to be affiliated with SoL is entitled to member access on the website. We simply ask the company's liaison officer to keep track of who within the company is active in SoL. Please contact your liaison officer to express your interest.

Q: How can I change the email address where Reflections, the SoL Journal is sent?

A: To update your address, you'll need to replace your existing login email in your online profile.
  1. Use the instructions above to login.
  2. Click the "Edit My Profile" link in the upper right hand corner of your personal homepage
  3. Scroll to the "Contact details" section of your profile page, and find the line that reads
  4. "Login Email [your email address] (update login email)"
  5. Click the (update login email) link and enter the email address you would prefer to use to login.
NOTE: if you are also making changes to your profile page, please save these changes first, and then return to the update login email link to update your email address, so that you won't lose the other changes you've made.

Q: I have gone through the login process on the website. My homepage will not link me to anything except for the "edit my profile" link and the manage calendar link. What happened?

or ...

Q: When I first logged in, I used a different login email from the one recommend. Did this make a difference?

or ...

Q: I tried to log in but my personal page didn't have any of my current communities or groups listed.

Where did they go?

A: This can happen if you've registered on the site using a different email address from the one the system already recognized as your UserID. The system will create a duplicate account for you. This is a problem because your level of participation on the website is determined by a complex permissions system. For example, there are areas of the site that have been reserved for SoL event and course participants, and are inaccessible to regular visitors. Similarly, a SoL member will have different site privileges from a course or event participant. The duplicate account that was created when you registered using a different email address, was not recognized by the website and created a new user with a "guest" status. It's important that you log in consistently with the same email address. See instructions above

If you missed a journal it may be because your inbox is full, you've recently changed email addresses, or you are using spam filtering/antivirus software. Please login to your account using the email address recognized by the website, and select a different login email address.

Permission / Request Errors

Q: I am a member of SoL [or a past course participant]. I am trying to access various forums and pages of solonline.org. It looks like I can't go into many areas because it says I have no access. One example is the Member Directory.

A: You may have created a duplicate account. Are you using the same combination of login email and password each time? See instructions above.

Q: I am not a member of SoL [or a past course participant]. I am trying to access various forums and pages of solonline.org. It looks like I can't go into many areas because it says I have no access. One example is the Member Directory.

A: Members of SoL and recent SoL course or event attendees have greater access to materials on the SoL website than members of the public who self registered on the website. If you would like greater access to the resources available on the website, please consider joining SoL as a member.

Q: I'm having a problem reading some of the links on the FLASH newsletter. I am getting a message that says "You don't have permission to read Library Files ?.." Am I doing something wrong?

A: FLASH links should work for everybody. Please send an email to our webmaster describing exactly which link you tried to access without success, and what browser you were using at the time.

Q; I get a "Request Error" when I try to add a document to the knowledge repository, edit my profile, add a new user to the system. What should I do?

A: A Request Error message can sometimes indicate that you are trying to do something the system can't accept, such as add a user who already exists on the system. But sometimes it indicates a bug in the system that we need to address. Please copy the text of the Request Error into an email and send it to our webmaster , with an explanation of exactly what you were trying to do at the time and what browser you were using to view the website.

Editing your online Profile

Q: How do I edit my profile?

A: Once you log in, click the "Edit My Profile" link in the upper right hand corner of your personal homepage to reach the editing screen for your online profile. Then follow the steps below to update your profile.

Step One
Read and accept the Rules of the Game

To ensure an enabling level of safety and trust in the community, we request that you explicitly consent to abide by a set of simple rules governing activity on the site. We expect that you will agree to conduct yourself with good manners and behave in any way consistent with the purposes and principles of SoL. Additionally, you will be asked to include information about yourself in the member directory, where you may control the visibility of certain elements (such as contact information), but may not be completely invisible to the community. We expect that you will agree to promote your services to one another only in areas designated for that purpose. There will be no minimum level of participation mandated, but closed subgroups will be required to publish some insights or outcomes of their activity to the broader community.

To read and accept the rules of the game:

  1. At the top of the profile edit page, click on the text that reads "I have read and agreed to the Rules of the Game". Read the Rules.
  2. To accept the terms, select the back button on your browser and click to place a checkmark in the box next to the phrase "I have read and agreed to the Rules of the Game"

Once you have accepted the Rules of the Game, use the text fields and select options to describe your experience and interests as they relate to this community and to organizational learning. At the top of the edit screen, you may click on the phrase, "Help with this page" to learn more about completing your profile. Some common questions that arise are:

Step Two
Changing your password

  1. You may also change your password to something easier to remember by clicking the "update password" link at the upper left corner of the screen.
  2. On the Update Password screen, enter your current and new password.
  3. confirm your new password
  4. click the Update button.
  5. You will see confirmation that your password has been updated, and you may return to the profile page as indicated.

Step Three
Choosing your visibility setting

In selecting a Visibility setting, you can specify whether you want your profile information to be shared with only your own community-such as Founding SoL, Connections Members, or Core Course March 2002-or with the wider SoL community, which includes all Founding SoL members, members of other local SoL Communities, Connections Members, and graduates of recent capacity building courses. Profile information in the Member Directory is never shared with the general public.

Step Four
Consultant and Researcher Marketplace

The List Me in the Consultant and Researcher Marketplace option is available to members only. If you check this box and click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page, you will be presented with a screen asking you to supply the names and descriptions of the programs, products, or projects you would like to highlight. Members of the public and SoL community members will now be able to locate you in the Marketplace.

  1. After checking the List Me in the Consultant and Researcher Marketplace option, scroll to the bottom of your profile page and select the save changes button
  2. Include an introductory description of yourself in the text box at the top of the page
  3. Click the save button
  4. In the Add a project, program, or product section, enter a name, keyword, subject, and a description in the appropriate fields. The subjects field will remain blank until you choose a keyword. To select multiple keywords and subjects, simply hold down the control key (Apple key on a Mac) as you select with the cursor. To de-select single items from a group of selected keywords or subjects, press and hold the control key (the Apple key on a Mac) and click the highlighted item(s).
  5. Click the add button when done
  6. Your project will be added below the Member description for Marketplace textbox.
  7. To return to the edit profile screen, click edit my profile
  8. To edit your marketplace listing, click the edit my marketplace listing link on your profile page.

Step Five
Selecting Areas of Expertise and Subject Keywords in the Knowledge, Experience & Learnings Section

Use the Knowledge & Experience text box to summarize your work history and areas of focus. Select the Expertise and Subjects keywords that other community members can use to find you in a search. Note that the Subject field remains blank until you choose an Expertise keyword, at which point, the Subjects corresponding to that area of Expertise appear, allowing you to further specify your strengths and experience. For example, if you select "Team Learning" in the Expertise keywords field, the Subjects "Dialogue Skills and Facilitation", "Face to face training", "Written Materials", "On-line programs", "Train-the-Trainer", "Learning Labs", "General Coaching and Consulting", and "General Research" appear under the heading "----Team Learning----" in the Subjects field just below.

Note also that you may select multiple entries in both the Expertise and the Subjects areas, and should choose all that apply. To select multiple areas of expertise and subjects, or to add additional choices to your existing list, simply hold down the control key (Apple key on a Mac) as you select with the cursor. To de-select single items from a group of selected keywords, press and hold the control key (the Apple key on a Mac) and click on the highlighted item to be removed.
